I've been installing Windows 7 on the HP EliteDesk G4 SFF computer. If you are also a fan of the Refurb elitedesk 800 models then I hope these links help.19 sep. So if anyone can source out newer firmware for those 3 onboard components please post. I also found the latest Windows no longer does bitlocker using the SSD built in encryption so I stopped preparing the samsung drives with ready to encrypt and secure erase since Microsoft no longer trusts drive manufacturers to encrypt things properly.

I clear the TPM and set secure boot options (if I want that) prior to popping in the new drive and booting into the windows installer.

I like using a spare drive for the firmware updates just so I do not need to go and reverse the registry changes and I can do clean install of the new drive with latest firmware in place prior to starting. You can the registry key back to 2 if you plan to use this as your OS drive and clear the TPM again once it has been updated.

Once windows boots you can run the firmware update now, it should have stored the new owner key while windows was booting and the utility finds this in the registery and will not bug you for an owner password or recovery file. Clear the tpm and reboot, press the Function key during bios boot to acknowledge you want to clear the TPM when it asks. Make sure that the bios has been set to "OS management of Embedded Security Device" Enabled so Windows can manage the TPM. So the process is, change registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\TPM OSManagedAuthLevel DWORD to 4 (default is 2)

Updating the TPM with the HP firmware update I have does not go smoothly with latest Windows 10 though. Pretty important to update Management engine for security especially if you activate vPro and make the management engine network interface active.Īnd TPM should be updated and cleared if you plan to use bitlocker support for sure! One machine running an earlier 2.70 bios wasn't booting after updating to a newer version of this appliance install based on linux and updating the bios got it working again. But in terms of day to day use, I found the BIOS 2.77 has improvements with PXE and vPro virtual media support. Now on the one hand the security updates are a big deal. (Someone hit the wrong button on their CMS and published old version) So it's like they reverted the website to 2017. The current support page is listing latest versions as:īIOS: L01 2.71 from Management Engine firmware: 9.

So the latest versions I can track down areīIOS: L01 2.77 release: ApManagement Engine firmware: 9. It seems like browsing their security disclosures are more reliable than checking the actual product support pages. I'm finding links to the newer firmware from security advisories in the HP knowledge base. I tried the trick that sometimes work of checking if firmware was newer if I selected Windows 7 instead of Windows 10 but it's basically the same. I'm really perplexed as to why they no longer show the latest updates on the download page for this product: The HP Support Assistant utilities are not even notifying about available firmware updates when I try installing that.

Now the problem I started running into is the HP drivers download page is showing me OLD versions of the BIOS, Management Engine firmware and TPM chip firmware updates. Worst is when the Management engine and TPM are not cleared so I make sure to do all that myself. Most of these are horribly out of date when I pull them out of the box and sometimes I can tell the firmware settings have been modified from default and not reset before they sent it out. I wish the Refurbishers would update and clear the firmware before shipping. It doesn't seem to be an intentional rollback either. They used to be up to date but it's like the reverted the page to an earlier version and forgot about them. But HP seems to be missing links for critical security patches on the download pages for these models. I'm buying a lot of these off lease refurb HP EliteDesk 800 G1 SFF machines as cheap desktop replacement for old Core2 and early 1st or second gen i5 machines still running windows 7 with spinning disks.
